Mr. Glade M. Knight is Executive Chairman of the Board of the Company. Mr. Knight is the founder of the Company and has served as Executive Chairman since May 2014, and previously served as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Company since its inception. Mr. Knight was also the founder of each of the former Apple REIT Companies and served as their Chairman and Chief Executive Officer from their inception until the companies were sold to a third party or merged with the Company, as described in Note 1 below. In addition, Mr. Knight served as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Cornerstone Realty Income Trust, Inc., a REIT, from 1993 until it merged with Colonial Properties Trust, a REIT, in 2005. Following the merger in 2005 until April 2011, Mr. Knight served as a trustee of Colonial Properties Trust. Cornerstone Realty Income Trust, Inc. owned and operated apartment communities in Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Texas. Mr. Knight is a partner and Chief Executive Officer of Energy 11 GP, LLC, the general partner of Energy 11, L.P., and Energy Resources 12 GP, LLC, the general partner of Energy Resources 12, L.P., partnerships focused on investments in the oil and gas industry since 2014.
