Dr. Niel B. Nielson, Ph.D., is an Independent Trustee of First Trust Intermediate Duration Preferred Income Fund. He has served as President and Chief Executive Officer of Dew Learning LLC since 2012. Mr. Nielson formerly served as President of Covenant College, and as a partner and trader for Ritchie Capital Markets Group, where he held an administrative management position at this proprietary derivatives trading company. He also held prior positions in new business development for ServiceMaster Management Services Company, and in personnel and human resources for NationsBank of North Carolina, N.A. and Chicago Research and Trading Group, Ltd. . His international experience includes serving as a director of CRT Europe, Inc. for two years, directing out of London all aspects of business conducted by the U.K. and European subsidiary of CRT. Prior to that, Mr. Nielson was a trader and manager at CRT in Chicago. Mr. Nielson has served as a Trustee of each First Trust Fund since its inception. Mr. Nielson has also served as the Chairman of the Audit Committee, Chairman of the Nominating and Governance Committee and Lead Independent Trustee and currently serves as Chairman of the Valuation Committee of the First Trust Funds.

Elected by the shareholders, the First Trust's board of directors comprises two types of representatives: First Trust inside directors who are chosen from within the company, and outside directors, selected externally and held independent of First. The board's role is to monitor First Trust's management team and ensure that shareholders' interests are well served. First Trust's inside directors are responsible for reviewing and approving budgets prepared by upper management to implement core corporate initiatives and projects. On the other hand, First Trust's outside directors are responsible for providing unbiased perspectives on the board's policies.
