Parilla graduated from Mercyhurst University in Erie, Pa in 1988 and his ties to the university remain close to this day. He currently serves on its Board of Trustees Investment Committee. He was featured multiple times in magazines, and also was the economics featured on a CBS morning segment entitled "Ask the Experts". Born and raised in the small steel and coal town of Mineral Ridge, Ohio, Mr. Parilla learned the value of a work ethic at an early age.
