He obtained Bachelor of Economics from Universitas Indonesia in 1992 and Masters degree in Economic Development in 1996 and Doctorate in Philosophy in Economics in 2001 from Australian National University. He was Minister of Finance of the Republic of Indonesia, Chairman of Investment Coordinating Board of the Republic of Indonesia, Vice Chairman of the National Economic Committee of the Republic of Indonesia, Special Advisor to the Minister of Finance of the Republic of Indonesia, Deputy Minister of Finance of the Republic of Indonesia for G20, and Advisor to the Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia . He is a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Economics, University of Indonesia, and Senior Fellow of Harvard Kennedy School. USA. He was member of the Asia Pacific Regional Advisory Group of the International Monetary Fund . since 2015.
